Welcome !

We are a New Mexico 501c3 nonprofit organization focused on breeding, providing, and training golden and labrador retrievers for psychiatric and mobility service. We also offer assistance to clients who wish to train their personal dog as a service animal. LEK's mission includes activities involving the community in helping fill the tremendous need for assistance dogs and in understanding how these wonderful animals support our differently abled population.

Our orientation toward early learning makes us an excellent provider of puppies to other 501c3 service dog training organizations. We are honored to follow techniques pioneered by Kay Laurence of the UK to produce "super learning pups" starting day one in the whelping box, followed by clicker training and positive reinforcement. Most of our current litter of Golden Retrievers, born on Easter (4/12/09), are headed to Canine Partners of the Rockies, which trains service dogs in Colorado for mobility assistance. We will retain one or two of the pups for our own psychiatric service dog program.

Our litter of Goldens born last summer has enjoyed working with youth at the Carrizozo Middle School, where young students learned to handle, groom and train the pups learning to become service dogs. Three of them are shown here with one of our chocolate labradors, who has enjoyed her role as an "aunt dog" and behavior model. This Fall, we return to the Carrizozo schools, this time working with 5th graders in their 21st Century Community Learning Center.

LEK is devoted to helping not only those with disabilities readily seen (like difficulty walking), but also sensory and psychiatric disabilities that render daily life a struggle. Our clients have medically diagnosed conditions that include anxiety, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, autism and severe depression. LEK founder and Army veteran, Cody Traver, is also dedicated to helping those with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), particularly service veterans and those who have suffered abuse. LEK is devoted to helping all of these individuals find ways of coping with their disabilities, assisted and nurtured by a service dog trained in tasks they find supportive.
